You probably found me here on Savvy because you have been looking everywhere trying to find out the status of your application. The school won’t give you any information and you have been waiting forever. It can be pretty frustrating. I have some details that might ease the pain.
When your FAFSA is completed you will receive a SAR via email and snail mail. This information is what you have qualifies for as far as federal aid. State and school aid is not included in the SAR. You shouldn’t receive this for 2-3 weeks, depending on when you filled out the application. If you submitted your application online using a pin it will be faster than that (about a week).
Sometimes it is not that easy. If there is anything left blank on your application, or you messed up somewhere, it can take a long time for you to receive an answer. I once had FAFSA call me and ask if my parents were deceased and if I was joining the army this year or next. I must have filled something out wrong or clicked the wrong box, because my parents are alive and well and I am too scrawny for the army. If you remember how long it took you to fill out the FAFSA, just realize that it will take them a while to review it.
Calling FAFSA, like any government agency, is going to be obtrusive. You will get an automated person that walks you through 10 options and then states you have the wrong number call this one and disconnects on you. This number is the quickest way to get someone on the phone. 1-319-337-5665. it’s not toll free but you will get someone faster. Here is the toll free number to check on your FAFSA status. 1-800-433-3243. if you have already been accepted to a college a great way to find FAFSA information is to contact your college office of financial services. They usually have a direct line to someone at the department of education who can clarify things for you and if they are nice they will help you.
You can check the status of a submitted FAFSA online. Go to the FAFSA website and step 3 will take you right to the status check. You will need your online pin in order to get into this section of FAFSA, but it can be useful. Your SAR will not be posted on FAFSA’s site, but will be sent to you and your school.
This information doesn’t get you your FAFSA faster, but at least you can know why you’re sitting there twiddling your thumbs instead of wondering. If you have never been to college…you are going to love it have fun. If you have… only 2 more years, you’re almost out of that hell hole!
