Summer Financial Aid – all work and no play

by blake on November 13, 2008

Going to summer school is like not sleeping in on a Saturday. You can do it but why would you? I have taken summer school twice in my college career, and though I don’t regret it now, in the midst of the fire I hated it. You can’t work to make up for the empty bank account. I have to sit and listen to summer Profs who have nothing better to do, so they teach. And then go home to boring reruns with no one home because they are out having fun. I have some ways to make the summer feel a little better. Get some of your misery paid for, and then come back and thank me when you have enough to buy a Chalupa at Taco Bell.

How do I get Summer Financial Aid?

While all your friends are moping about homework and you’re graduated, you’ll have the last laugh. The answer is yes the funds are available for summer students. You just have to know where to look. The first place to go is FAFSA. Once again fill out the grievous application for some good ole federal aid! Once you do that there are some other places you can go that offer summer grants and scholarships. You have to contact your schools financial aid office to see if any other forms need to be filled out. For me, these were the ‘Summer Intent Form’ and ‘summer financial aid application’. The money students during the year don’t use, can often be rolled over into summer students who are trying to further their education instead of in San Diego playing beach volleyball.

Sorry no University Grants but YAY! Work Study

Most Universities, including mine (SPU), do not offer student grants for the summer semester. This may not be the case for your school so contact a financial aid administrator, or your financial counselor and ask them to give you more money. It didn’t work when I said “give me more money” but if you sugar coat it you might be in luck. 3 years running I have done University Work Study, which allows me to be employed and pays for my tuition. Check out work study because it can pay for a lot of your school while you’re also getting paychecks. Work Study jobs aren’t limited to the cafeteria either, many employers love work study students because the University pays them back for employing you.

Financial Aid for your Major

What is your major? Biology? Communications? There are a lot of grants, competitions, and support from companies out there that will give you summer stipends as financial aid. You have to Google your major and then grants. I did this one summer and got a $900 check as a summer grant and I took one class at Community College. Beware of the scams. Do your research and don’t give your information to anybody over the web.

Summer Financial Aid is out there, you just have to look hard, be persistent, and fill out that stupid FAFSA. Work Study is a great way to go if you are willing to work while you are taking summer school. If you cant afford the time than apply for a lot of grants. If everything fails, you can spread your loans out during the year to cover the summer school cost and most financial aid office will give you the info you need. Don’t waste anymore time, summer will be here before you know it! If you must. Ditch everything and go overseas for a summer. Study or don’t study, but be sure you get short term travel insurance.
